We Knead Connection™ is a mindful, tech-free experience designed to foster connection, creativity, and belonging through the simple act of baking together.
Created by Outside the Box Institute, the program brings people together to slow down, create, connect, and rediscover the power of shared experiences.
Because in an increasingly disconnected world,
we all knead connection. 🥖🧡

We Knead Connection™ is a tech-free, creative baking experience rooted in mindfulness, connection, belonging, and outside-the-box thinking. Participants create handcrafted breads and bagels
while exploring flavors, creativity, and the joy of making
something with their hands.
There are no wrong answers, no perfect outcomes, and no pressure—just hands in dough, curiosity, and community.
As We Knead Connection™ grows, so do our baking experiences, partnerships, and opportunities to foster connection and belonging through the simple act of creating together.
We are grateful to the businesses and community partners whose support helps bring We Knead Connection™ to life.
Special thanks to Whole Foods Market in Tustin, California, and Claro's Italian Market for their in-kind donations of Italian 00 flour, and to
InPoint, a woman-owned business, for its financial contribution to our mission. Their support helps us create meaningful, hands-on experiences that foster creativity, belonging, and genuine human connection.

Across the country, people of all ages are experiencing unprecedented levels of loneliness, social isolation, anxiety, and disconnection. At the same time, more young people are forming emotional attachments to chatbots and online platforms instead of real human relationships.
While technology offers many benefits, it cannot replace the warmth, trust, and sense of belonging that come from genuine, face-to-face human connection.
Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has described
loneliness and social isolation as a public health crisis, emphasizing that simple acts like sharing meals and gathering around a table can be powerful antidotes to disconnection. That insight is at the heart of Outside the Box Institute's work.
At Outside the Box Institute, we believe social health deserves the same attention as physical and mental health—and that meaningful human connection is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen it.
We Knead Connection™ is our signature social health initiative—not simply a baking workshop. Designed to address loneliness, social isolation, and the growing need for belonging, it uses the universal language of baking to foster connection, creativity, and community through shared, hands-on experiences.

There is no expectation to perform, impress, or create something perfect. We Knead Connection™ is intentionally process-oriented, welcoming participants of all skill levels to experiment, make mistakes, and discover the joy of creating together.
By removing the pressure to "get it right," participants often discover something far more meaningful: confidence, creativity, and genuine human connection. No baking experience is required—
just a willingness to connect.
Through baking and cooking, participants:
Every participant leaves with more than freshly baked bread—they leave with new skills, meaningful memories, and a deeper appreciation for the power of human connection.

One of the greatest strengths of We Knead Connection™ is its versatility. As a social health initiative, it can be adapted for a wide range of audiences and settings, including:

Our relationships with partner organizations help:
Because in an increasingly disconnected world, we all knead connection.
Whether bringing together students, employees, families, older adults,
or community members, We Knead Connection™ demonstrates
that meaningful connection often begins with something
as simple as gathering around a table, working with our hands,
and sharing what we create.
In a world that needs more connection, kindness, and belonging,
we believe some of the most meaningful conversations
begin around a table.

"The Bread Making Party was a very fun environment to be apart of because we were able to learn step by step the process of making bread and bagels! I highly recommend this to other people and even got so many comments about how my friends want me to teach them how to make bread now! Not only was it a place where I could socialize but I was able to meet new people and build stronger connections with friends!"

"I had the best time at the first bread party!!! It was so fun to be social while all learning to make something and bonding over delicious bread we were able to sample together. It made me feel very connected with others so I would definitely recommend this to others who would like to connect through a fun new activity which was surprisingly easy to try which you can then do at home! I had such a great time and would love to learn more next time! Can’t wait for the next event!!
Thank you again for putting on that event!!
It was a lot of fun (and delicious) 😋!

"I was surprised how much I enjoyed making the
bread and bagels because I would not consider myself a creative chef. The opportunity to see the demonstration in person was so helpful when it was time to create our own. Community events like this that bring people together towards a common human necessity such as food are so crucial and effective in combatting the loneliness epidemic this country faces. I would 1000% recommend an event like this to people of all ages and backgrounds. Cant wait until the next one!!"

"For someone who experiences social anxiety and battles introversion, this was a very special event for me. I loved the fact that the bread didn’t have to come out perfect, and we were given creative freedom to express ourselves in a unique way.
I would 100% recommend this event to others, and I feel that this bread making class is unique in so many ways. I haven’t had an experience like this and it really brought the people in our group together. I believe this is an amazing way to form friendships and connections with people! It really bonds people together, and people who are complete strangers in the beginning of the workshop can walk out having formed the most beautiful friendships."

"The bread-making lesson was so much fun. It felt relaxed
and welcoming and I loved learning something new while spending time with everyone. It was simple enough to be approachable but also engaging. Having tasks to do made it especially nice because you could chat while working
or just focus on your bread/bagels if you wanted,
which created a very comfortable and social atmosphere.
Talking about the baking process and how we each wanted
to customize our bread also made for an easy,
natural way to connect."
